Planet Comic-Con '12 - The Recap.

Greetings Friends,

Another Planet Comic-Con down. They seem to take forever to come around each year (and they are over so quick).

Some high-lites from this years show:

#1. Meeting Tim Sale (again). Getting some books signed, getting a Batman print and sketch book. I also asked where's Captain America White? He assured me that it was coming. He said that two issues were complete. --- But the zero issue came out in 2008. What's taking so long?

#2. Meeting Dave Johnson (for the first time). I got some books signed and bought a Superman print (of what I consider one of his finest covers). I would consider him a super star but he had very few people at his table. Nice guy though.

#3. Getting my Bernie Wrightson book - Creepy Presents Bernie Wrightson signed by Bernie and Bruce Jones.

#4. Meeting Steven T. Seagle (for the first time) and talking about his ending of Sand Man Mystery Theater (one of my favorite comic book projects). And picking up a few signed books from him.

#5. Meeting John Layman and getting my Chew Omnivore Edition vol.1 signed by him. Also talking Chew comic and (hopefully) Showtime TV show.

#6. Meeting Matt Kindt (again), watching him water color a very nice Beta Ray Bill he drew for a lucky fan and getting my copy of The Tooth signed with neat little drawing.

#7. Talking to other random pros like Jason Aaron and B. Clay Moore. Seeing Edward James Olmos, Gil Gerard and Erin Gray.

#8. Buying cool comics, trades, graphic novels, prints, toys and sketchbooks.

#9. Off course going to three Half Price Books while in KC.

#10. And eating at Cinzetti's and Jack Stack Bar-B-Que.

Down side:

#1. Way Over Crowded On Saturday! This was a first.

#2. Ten hour round trip car ride.

All in all, I give the weekend a solid A.

2012 - End of Week 12 - Books.

Greetings Friends,

In the last couple of weeks I've read four graphic novels. Check them out.

Graphic Novels:

#9 (of 20). Monkey vs. Robot by James Kochalka.

In the jungle monkey's are minding their own business. They are just being playful and inquisitive. Then one day a robot factory starts pumping out robots. These robots are sent out to collect materials for the making of more robots. If that isn't bad enough, the sludge from the factory kills an innocent monkey. That's when all hell brakes loose. The monkeys get organized and go after the robots. So begins the eternal struggle of monkey vs. robot.

#10 (of 20). Monkey vs. Robot and the Crystal of Power by James Kochalka.

This follow up book finds the monkeys and robots at odds again. The robots are collecting plants and animal to extract knowledge from them. When a monkey escapes the extractor it starts a power surge that cripples the robot "brain". Robots are sent out to find a new power crystal. This reignites the eternal struggle of monkey vs. robot.

For humor and and nice cartoony art these books are a must read. If you aren't familiar with Kochalka these books are a good place to start.

#11 (of 20). Little and LARGE by Tony Millionaire.

This is another Sock Monkey (Uncle Gabby) tale. In this story the wood cutter cuts down a tree. This act displaces many animals. One of which is a daddy long legs. He is very sad that he has no home so he gets Uncle Gabby to help him find a new one.

Although it is a short tale, it does have wonderful drawings reminiscent of a nice little big book story. Another winner from Tony Millionaire.

#12 (0f 20). 3 Story - The Secret History of the Giant Man by Matt Kindt.

This is the story Craig Pressgang's life. Pressgang grows and grows. He becomes super tall (many stories tall). What at first is celebrity ends up alienating him from all relationships. This is a nice story with very depressing ending.

Written, drawn and water colored by Matt Kindt, this is a beautiful and sad tale. At Planet Comic Con in Kansas City this weekend I talked to Matt Kindt about 3 Story. I told him that the out come of Craig Pressgang was very sad. Matt agreed but said a lot of his stories have depressing endings (and he was not a depressed person - that's good to know).

All four books are highly recommended. You should check them out.

2012 - End of Week 10 - Books.

Greetings Friends,

I've read three more books this week. Check them out.

First of all in Graphic Novels.

Graphic Novel #8 (of 20).

Wilson by Daniel Clowes.

This is another fine example of Clowes writing a story about a social outcast. The book begins with Wilson our protagonist (who is really the antagonist of everyone he meets) accosting a lady while walking her dog. He asks her how life was treating her. Her response is a little long winded (true) but his reply is: "For the love of Christ don't you ever shut up." That's about how all his interactions go with everyone he meets. He really rubs everyone the wrong way. So because of this he has no friends and his wife leaves him while she is pregnant.

The book is basically told in one page slices of Wilson's life. Each page is a complete slice and moves the story along to the next. Each page also has it's own art style as is the case with all Clowes books. During the book we see Wilson age from approx. late 30's to late 70's. Even though he sort of tries in the end he never really gets close to anyone.

Book #6 (of 12).

The Boys vol.8 Highland Laddie by Garth Ennis and John McCrea.

Now I'm a big fan of The Boys, but I've got to tell you this book isn't the best of the lot. In this book Wee Hughie (down in the dumps) goes home to take a break. After he learned his girlfriend was a super hero and what she'd done, he needed a break from his work in the states. So Hughie travel back to Scotland to visit his maw and paw. While taking a break he runs into some old friends and meets a nice painter. Then his girlfriend shows up. Yawn. Not the usual excitement we're used to.

While not the most action packed arc, it does move Hughie's story along. Maybe this arc could have been told in flahbacks in The Boys proper (this was a separate limited series). As far as the art goes while adequate I wish Darick Robertson could illustrate the entire run.

Book #7 (of 12).

Hulk vol. 6 World War Hulks by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness.

This volume finishes up Loeb and McGuinness' 24 issue run. During this run, the Red Hulk was introduced into the Marvel universe. This last volume answers the question - Who is the Red Hulk? The answer is not shocking but will give future writers much to write about.

While some might not care for Loeb's writing he has always been a favorite of mine and I would not have picked up the series otherwise. This story has been fun through out and McGuinness' art work has been very powerful.

Keep Reading Comics.
