Pick Of My Pile for the week of 12-23. The Last Pick.

Hello Chums,

A lot of trade reading completed. Check it out. The Boys vol.5 Herogasm. A trade better than the two before it. Really raunchy! And 100 bullets trades 6-13. A very good crime comic from start to finish. Nice art + Hard core story = WINNER!

Here's the picks:

Marvel:

Punisher #12. Frankencastle and the Marvel monsters with Tony Moore art.

Stephen King - Dark Tower - Battle Of Jericho Hill #2 (of 5). End this already.

The New Avengers #60. Micro surgery on (inside) Luke Cage's heart by Hank Pym and Stephen Strange.

Stephen King - The Stand - Soul Survivors #3 (of 5). Maybe the best Marvel book on the shelf currently.

Halo -Blood Line #1 (of 5). The new Halo series with nice art and coloring.

Uncanny X-Men #519. Hank McCoy leaves the X-Men.

Spider-Woman #4. Okay story so far but GREAT art / coloring by Alex Maleev.

Criminal - The Sinners #3 (ICON). Nice Tracy Lawless story so far.

DC:

Detective Comics #860. More Batwoman back story. This has been very good overall. Rucka can write nice women stories. We know that but the Williams III art is great.

APE:

The Black Coat - Or Give Me Death #4 (of 4). An interesting end to a series a loooong time in the making.

Dark Horse:

Hellboy - The Bride Of Hell (one-shot). An entertaining story with Richard Corben art.

The Last Pick Of My Pile is Stephen King - The Stand - Soul Survivors. These Stand mini-series are very good. The story may not follow the book word for word but the story is definitely there. Very enjoyable with super art and coloring.

Keep Reading Comics. I will.

Pick Of My Pile for the week of 12-16.

Hello Chums,

I read the next two vols. (4 & 5) of 100 Bullets this week. Very good over all, however my favorite story so far was Idol Chatter. Although they're not named, this story features a baseball player (Joe DiMaggio), a starlet (Marilyn Monroe) and a president (Kennedy). This story explains what happened to Monroe and Kennedy 100 Bullets style. Very Nice.

On to my picks.

Marvel:

Astonishing X-Men #33. This story seems to be getting better and the art work is very good.

Captain America - Reborn #5 (of 6). Captain America vs. Captain America.

DDP:

The Zombies That Ate The World #7 (of 8). This issue was actually better than the last one.

Image:

Elephantmen #23. Tusk is dead and Hip has been turned back into a soldier?

IDW:

Star Trek - Deep Space Nine #1. Although the character likeness' aren't that good, this is still a Deep Space Nine comic! Sign me up.

Incorruptible #1. What if a super villain turned good to battle an out of control hero? Cool Tim Sale cover.

The Pick Of Pile this week is Star Trek - Deep Space Nine. No Star Trek show had a meatier continuing story than DS9. This arc seems to be set in the first 2 or 3 seasons of the show. That's okay by me.

Pick Of My Pile for the week of 12-9.

Hello Chums,

I read three trades this week. The first was My Space Dark Horse Presents vol.1. This vol. has numerous short stories that appeared at Dark Horse on-line. My favorite was a 4 part Goon story. The other two trades were 100 Bullets vol.2 & vol.3. By reading a couple of titles back to back you can kind of see a long underlying story develop.

My Picks:

Marvel:

The New Avengers annual #3. Ms. Marvel, Spider-Woman, Mockingbird and Jewel go on a all women mission to rescue Clint Barton.

Punisher Noir #4 (of 4). The conclusion to this thirties era Punisher tale.

Punisher Max #2. Part two of this wonderfully violent Kingpin story.

Black Widow - Deadly Origin #2 (of 4). Nice story with okay current art and great flash back art.

DC:

Johah Hex #50. Extra long story with very nice art by Darwyn Cooke.

DC Universe Holiday Special '09. Anthology issue with 16 or so stories. Featuring the usual Superman, Batman, the Flash, etc.

Sweet Tooth #1. After the accident (nuclear war?) few children were born. The ones who were born are born special. Sweet Tooth has horns(?).

IDW:

Star Trek - Alien Spotlight - Cardassians. A weak Cardassian story that takes place after the Dominion War.

Jon Sable Freelance - Ashes of Eden #3. More Mike Grell! Jon Sable looses the diamond?

NEC:

The Mangalicious Tick #4 (of 4). The okay end to this weak mini-series.

Dark Horse:

B.P.R.D. - War of Frogs #4. A creepy Frog ghost story.

Image / Top Cow:

Murderer #1. This is a Pilot Season issue (basically an issue for fans to vote if they want to see more). This story features Jason a young man who can hear every ones thoughts and who kills people (they seem to deserve it). I liked this story quite a bit.

Although there were a few books worth mentioning: Johah Hex, Black Widow and Punisher Max, The Pick Of My Pile this week is The New Avengers annual. This book was a lot of fun with decent art.

Pick Of My Pile for the week of 12-3.

Hello Chums,

I read one "trade" this week which was Young Gods and friends. If you remember back to the mid 90's Dark Horse Comics was publishing the OVERSIZED Barry Windsor-Smith Storyteller. Each issue featured three continuing stories, Young Gods, Paradox Man and (my favorite) The Freebooters. Although there were only 9 issues, this comic had fantastic art/coloring and was sorely missed when it was canceled. Well Fantagraghic books has collected all of the Young Gods material (from the issues) along with never before published stories and extras into a very handsome over sized hardcover. This book contains everything BWS did on the Young Gods with notes on why it was canceled (Dark Horse Comics [poor] management). This book is a must for BWS fans.

On to my picks:

Marvel:

Captain America - Theater of War - Prisoners of Duty (one-shot). Steve Rogers in a Nazi prison camp jail brake.

Stephen King - The Dark Tower - Battle of Jericho Hill # 1 (of 5). How many more dark Tower books are there going to be?

Black Knight #1 (one-shot). The secret origin of the Black Knight is revealed.

The Marvels Project #4 (of 8). The assassination of The Ferret.

Uncanny X-Men #518. Cyclops doing psychic surgery on Emma Frost. Since Scott Summers and Emma Frost are a couple and have been for so long, does that mean when Jean Grey comes back (she's coming) she will finally hook up with Logan?

Siege - The Cabal (one-shot). Nice art featuring Osborn vs. Dr. Doom.

DC:

The Warlord #9. More great story and art from Mike Grell. Who could that be at the end who is coming back? I wonder.

Red Tornado #4 (of 6). More with Red Tornado and his siblings.

Jack of Fables #40. Probably my last issue.

Blacklist:

R13 #2. More R13 fighting monsters, this time a giant bird.

Del Rey:

The Talisman #2. Jack Sawyer travels to the territories in hopes of saving his mother.

Radical:

The Last Days of American Crime. Free Primer for Rick Remender's new mini-series. Nice art.

The Pick Of My Pile this week is The Warlord. Mike Grell continues to please as the writer/artist of this great series.

Pick Of My Pile for the week of 11-25.

Hello Chums,

I read only one trade this week, bummer. My trade was Pigeons From Hell, a re-imagined Robert E. Howard story. While I liked the art and coloring, the story fell very flat with me. On to my picks.

The biggest comic buying week ever! But I don't think that's necessarily a good thing.

Marvel:

Son Of Marvel Reading Chronology (free). Off to a good start with this one.

Stephen King - The Dark Tower - Fall of Gilead #6 (of 6). Is the end in site for these limited series?

Uncanny X-Men #517. The X-Men battle Predator Xs.

Ultimate Avengers #4. Captain America running from S.H.I.E.L.D. in France.

The New Avengers #59. The Avengers and friends jail break Luke Cage from the clutches of Norman Osborn.

Giant-Size Thor Finale #1 (one-shot). The conclusion to the Straczynski re-introduction to Thor with a back up of Journey into Mystery #83 (first Thor issue).

Immortal Weapons #5 (of 5). The untold origin of Prince of Orphans. Most definitely the weakest of the five issues.

Criminal - The Sinners #2 (Icon). Ed Brubaker's Badass Tracy Lawless + Sean Phillips' art + 24 pages of story + 10 pages of extras = Complete Package!

Halo Helljumper #5 (of 5). The conclusion to the Helljumper series.

DC:

Detective Comics #859. A story from Kate Kane's (Batwoman) military days.

Radical:

Hercules - The Knives of Kush #4 (of 5). Herc and friends hanging with the Egyptians.

Dark Horse:

Creepy #2. Cover by Eric Powell with art by Nathan Fox and Angelo Torres to name a few.

The Goon #33. A fully painted stand alone story. Very nice!

Ape:

The Black Coat - Or Give Me Death p.1&2 (of 4). After a computer crash and loosing the art files for issue two, this book has FINALLY shipped TWO YEARS LATER!

The Black Coat - Or Give Me Death p.3 (of 4). This series is almost over. Bummer but worth the wait.

NEC:

The Tick - New Series #1. A full color, nice little Christmas kick off issue.

IDW:

Star Trek - Nero #4 (of 4). Nero finally catches Spock. Oh No.

DDP:

I Am Legion #6 (of 6). Finally the conclusion to this slow moving story.

The Pick Of My Pile this week is The Black Coat 1,2,3. Over two years in the making and it's finally shipping! Yeah!

Pick Of My Pile for the week of 11-18.

Hello Chums,

No trades read this week. On to my picks.

Marvel:

Punisher #11. After the events of Punisher-Dark Reign - The List (one-shot), this book has the Punisher being put back together (Frankenstein style) and hanging out with some monsters. Odd idea with great art by Tony Moore.

Spider-Woman #3. From the writing to the artwork to the coloring, this book is bad ass. I highly recommend it. Check it out.

Deadpool - Merc with a mouth #5. Okay, I wasn't going to sign on to pick up multiple issues of this book, but it has been a lot of fun. The Bong Dazo art doesn't hurt either.

Stephen King - The Stand - Soul Survivors #2 (of 5). We all know this story is great, but month after month Aguirre-Sacasa, Perkins and Martin continue to shine.

Powers Encyclopedia (Icon). The thick issue is a who's who of the Powers universe. This issue has a lot of helpful entries on characters I had forgotten and a few spoilers of future story lines.

Del Rey:

Stephen King / Peter Straub - The Talisman #1. As much as I liked the novel, this first issue is just so so. I will give it a chance though.

Dark Horse:

Dr. Horrible #1. A nice little story that sheds some light on how Dr. Horrible took the villains path when he was a kid.

Sugar Shock (one-shot). Joss Whedon and Fabio Moon's futuristic rock band. Funny bit with President Lincoln. Nice art.

Bongo:

The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror #15. Bought for one reason only: Jeffrey Brown story - Bad Milhouse. Brown's Incredible Changesbots coloring really makes his story stand out over the other fare in this issue.

IDW:

Star Trek - The Next Generation - Ghosts #1. Although this first issue sets up a good story, the character likeness' by this artist is not the usual IDW fare.

DC:

The Flash - Rebirth #5 (of 6). This limited series has been pretty good so far. My only complaint is: why is it so late?

Avatar:

Supergod #1. This is probably my first Avatar book since Frank Miller's Robo Cop. Avatar's type of books just don't appeal to me. This book is no exception. This will be my first and last issue.

The Pick Of My Pile this week is The Stand - Soul Survivors. I'm liking this series so much I kind of wished I'd held out for the hard backs.

Pick Of My Pile for the week of 11-11.

Hello Chums,

I read three trades this week: Ex Machina vol. 1 & 2 (both good) and 100 Bullets vol. 1. Some people may hate the process (and possibly the end result) but I find Tony Harris' art on Ex Machina very appealing. Nice clean lines. The Risso art of 100 Bullets, on the other hand, is anything but a nice clean line. Although it takes some getting used to, the art does work with the story.

On to my pile.

Marvel:

Punisher Max #1. What can I say? If Garth Ennis can't write The Punisher, Jason Aaron is a great choice. Steve Dillon art too! Excellent!

Sky Doll - Doll Factory #1 (of 2). Very nice pencil pages of the Sky Doll mini-series.

Dark Horse:

Hellboy - The Wild Hunt #8 (of 8). The conclusion of the best Hellboy story in years.

B.P.R.D. 1947 #5 (of 5). The conclusion of a nice little story with art by Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon.

IDW:

Jon Sable Free Lance - Ash of Eden #2. Not knowing anything about Jon Sable I'm going to hang in there for this arc. Hey it is written and drawn by one of my all time favorites - Mike Grell.

The Ghoul #1. I only picked this book up because it is drawn by another old favorite of mine - Bernie Wrightson. Although Wrightson's artwork is okay, it's definitely not up there with his illustration work. I'll hang in there for a little while.

Star Trek Romulans Schism #3. John Byrne is in over his head on this Star Trek arc. I couldn't tell from the last panel if this was the final issue or not. Probably not since it's issue #3, but who knows?

DDP:

The Zombies That Ate The World #6 (of 8). Okay, the artwork is great, but the stories are getting progressively worse. End this already.

ONI:

Resurrection #5. An okay book but I read too many okay books. It's officially back on my death watch.

DC:

Batman and Robin #6. Okay, Quitely is doing the covers but when is he back on the interiors? DC needs to get this fixed or it will be dropped!

Batman / Doc Savage Special #1 (one-shot). I've loved Doc Savage since Jr. High. So DC bringing him back to start a new world (First Wave) set in the 30's sounds like a can't miss. Throwing in Batman (a non-powered super hero) sounded okay too. But then DC had to go and ruin it by adding some old has-beens (Justice Inc., The Blackhawks) and a character that doesn't fit into current continuity (The Spirit). And why o' why are they placing Black Canary and some jungle girl in the mix? This looks like a disaster to me.

The Pick Of My Pile this week was very easy. With Punisher Max #1, Jason Aaron has set in motion a whole new story line that features The Kingpin! Cool! This is head and shoulders above all other books.

K.R.C.

Pick Of My Pile for the week of 11-4.

Hello Chums,

I was able to read one trade this week. My selection was The Golden Age by James Robinson and Paul Smith. Without getting into a full-blown review of this book, I'll tell you that it's a DC Elseworld story set in the 40's. I'll also tell you that the story had some good parts but I felt it was kind of lacking compared to similar "Golden Age" stories.

On to my picks.

Week of 11-4:

Marvel:

Astonishing X-Men #32. The return of The Brood with very nice art by Phil Jimenez.

Immortal Weapons #4 (of 5). The very odd origin of Tiger's Beautiful Daughter.

Black Widow Deadly Origin #1. A nice opening issue, but what really shines is the flashback art by John Paul Leon.

Ultimate Avengers #3. Continuing with The Next Generation p.3. The Red Skull is Cap's son!?!

Captain America Reborn #4 (of 5). Can The Red Skull and Dr. Doom bring Cap back? Wait, why would they want too?

DC:

Red Tornado #3 (of 6). The Red Tornado and his siblings meet their creator.

The Warlord #8. The conclusion of the two part Mike Grell written and illustrated story. One word: Awesome.

Dark Horse:

Sir Edward Grey Witchfinder: In The Service of Angels #5 (of 5). The conclusion to this nice first arc. With this character's stories, Hellboy, B.P.R.D. (current), B.P.R.D. (1940's) and Lobster Johnson, Mike Mignola has created himself quite an empire of characters and potential stories.

Age Of Reptiles: The Journey #1 (of 4). I picked up Ricardo Delgado's first two Age Of Reptiles arcs when they were new probably 15 years ago(?). Where has this guy been? It looks like he has never left. Do yourself a favor and pick up this book.

ONI:

Stumptown #1. A new crime series by Greg Rucka! This is a nice fat (35 pages) opening issue. Good compelling start - check. Nice art - check (kind of reminds me of Sean Philips with Val Staples on color on Criminal). Nice overall package.

There was more than a few good books this week: Age Of Reptiles, The Warlord, Black Widow to name a few. However, the Pick Of My Pile this week is Stumptown by Greg Rucka. This book has the feeling a nice crime movie. I can't wait for the second issue.

Pick Of My Pile for the week of 10-28.

Hello Chums,

Another week with no trades read. That's not good.

Week of 10-28:

Marvel:

Halo - Helljumper #4 (of 5). Continuing on with Dutch and Romeo looking for their squad.

Punisher #10. It would appear that this is the last issue in this arc that pits the Punisher against The Hood. GOOD! I am tired of this story.

Punisher - Dark Reign - The List (one-shot). Quite possibly the most violent Punisher issue ever. Great art by J.R. Jr.

The New Avengers #58. Can anyone save Luke Cage? Norman Osborn will try.

New Mutants #6. Doug Ramsey is a bad ass! And Warlock is back. I may drop this book, but not yet.

DC:

Detective Comics #858. The start of Batwoman's second arc. Nice back story Rucka style. And what can I say about Williams III art? Nice, very nice.

Jack of Fables #39 (Vertigo). I'm dreadfully behind on my Fables/Jack reading. I can't wait to get caught up.

Astro City - Astra special #2 (of 2)(Wildstorm). The conclusion of Astra's graduation night. These two issues are what made Astro City great. Only one more arc of The Dark Age left, then back to regular numbering!

N.E.C.:

The Mangalious Tick #2 (of 4). This second issue was much better than the first.

Dark Horse:

Abe Sapien - The Haunted Boy (one shot). Nice stand alone story with art by new comer Patric Reynolds.

Boom:

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? #5. I need to get caught up on my reading of this dense title. Very nice Moritat cover.

The Pick Of My Pile this week is Punisher - Dark Reign - The List. This book not only had a pretty good wrap-up of the Punisher/Norman Osborn/Hood story line, but also great art by J.R. jr.

Pick Of My Pile for the week of 10-21.

Hello Chums,

No Trades This Week. BUMMER! On to my picks.

Marvel:

Stephen King: The Stand - Soul Survivors #1. Any Stand fan or King fan for that matter should be reading this great adaption. My highest recommendation.

Thor - Tales of Asgard #6 ( of 6). The end of this wonderfully drawn (and colored) series. I will miss this book.

Deadpool Merc With A Mouth #4. The conclusion of the Savage Land arc. Although I liked this arc (and the art), I am always looking for a book to drop. This may be one.

IDW:

Angel VS. Frankenstein (one-shot). This nice little stand alone story has some of John Byrne's best art in a while. The coloring by Ronda Pattison really fits the mood of the story also.

Star Trek - Nero #3. Continuing on with the Nero movie prequel. If you liked the new movie, you should be reading this book.

ONI:

Resurrection #4. Life after the alien occupation continues with flash backs featuring everyone's favorite Pres., Bill Clinton.

Image:

Elephantmen #22. This issue features very nice art by Andre Szymanowicz. Story: okay only.

The Pick Of My Pile this week is John Byrne's Angel VS. Frankenstein. A surprisingly good book that I almost didn't pick up.

Pick Of My Pile for the week of 10-14.

Hello Chums,

Not really any trades read this week as I have been getting caught up on some TV viewing. That's a bummer. But I have been keeping up with my comic reading, check it out!

Week of 10-14:

Marvel:

Deadpool #900! What the? The first comic to hit #900 is Deadpool? You got it. Okay, Deadpool is far from a favorite character of mine, but this THICK (100? page) issue is pretty good. It doesn't hurt that the likes of Jason Aaron and Duane Swierczynski are on board with stories. Also included is the cover gallery featuring all 900 covers!

Punisher #75. The last issue of this series features 5 Punisher stories and a sneak peak of Punisher Max #1 by Jason Aaron and (my favorite) Steve Dillon. I can't wait for the new series!

Punisher Noir #3 (of 4). More hyper-violent 1930's Punisher action!

Spider-Woman #2. Although Bendis' story is good so far, the art/coloring by Alex Maleev is awesome! Not to be missed.

The Marvels Project #3 (of 8). The origin of Marvel Comics with the original Human Torch against Namor.

Uncanny X-Men #516. The return of Magneto. Is he a friend now?

Image:

Liberty Comics #2. Tim Sale cover! Stories by Jason Aaron, Moritat, Ben Templesmith and Paul Pope among others.

Dark Horse:

Hellboy #7 (of 8). Continuing the best Hellboy story in quite some time, The Wild Hunt.

B.P.R.D. 1947 #4 (of 5). I getting to where I like these (old) stories. Hellboy jr. is cool too.

IDW:

Star Trek: Spock Reflections #4 (of 4). The final chapter of Spock's mission to bring back Kirk's body.

Jon Sable Freelance - Ashes of Eden #1. Although I'm a HUGE Mike Grell Warlord fan, I haven't read any Jon Sable. After reading this issue I'm kind of on the fence about Jon Sable. I do have the first two trades and probably should put them in my reading rotation.
The Pick Of My Pile this week is Spider-Woman #2. This issue is a very good follow-up to the first issue. Smartly written, great action and violence, what more could you want? I can't wait for the next issue.

Pick Of My Pile for the weeks of 9-30 and 10-7.

Hi Chums,

I've been reading an incredible amount of trades lately. Check out my reads.

First up is Richard Stark's (Donald Westlakes') Parker The Hunter as adapted by Darwyn Cooke. This is a nice crime/noir story with Cooke's usual animated style. The men of this book tend to have a hard/tough/criminal look, while the women (woman) has a nice, soft, eye appealing look. His style really works for this type of story. Although it was a fast read, the good news is he's doing another Parker novel for next year.

Keeping with Darwyn Cooke, my next trade was Batman Ego and other tales. Besides Ego, this book features all Cooke work including the very nice Catwoman: Selina's Big Score, a couple of Gotham Knights stories, a couple of Solo pieces and some pin-ups. Although I had read some (most) of this material before, this trade is very good and shouldn't be missed by a Batman or Cooke fan.

Next up is The Perry Bible Fellowship Almanac by Nick Gurewitch. This book is cram-packed with his on-line and newspaper strips. Gurewitch has mastered many art styles and they are on display in this book. Some of his styles ape other strips, while some are all his own. This results in art that more or less goes with the subject of the particular strip. Although these strips have very diverse subject matter, one has to wonder what paper would publish some of his (funny but inappropriate) strips. I highly recommend this book.

Also read this week was The Boys vol.4 We Gotta Go Now. Although I really liked this series at first, these last two trades have only been so so. Since they've announced this series is going to end in a few issues I'll probably see it through to the end. --This series reminds me of how The Exterminators started off with a bang but ended rather flatly. Bummer.

Lastly read was The Golems Mighty Swing by James Sturm. This Drawn and Quarterly book features nice art with beige tones on yellow paper. This is a nice period piece about a traveling Jewish baseball team taking on all comers. Nice start but very weak bailout ending.

On to my picks:

Week of 9-30:

Marvel:

No Man Can Stand Against...(wait for it) Shang -Chi Master of Kung Fu #1 (one shot). 48 pages of Kung Fu action? Not really. 48 pages -yes. But motor-cycles and Deadpool - NOOOO. Four stories with decent black and white art, but a weak attempt for the mighty Shang-Chi.

Stephen King The Dark Tower: Fall of Gilead #5 (of 6). If they stopped this series it wouldn't hurt my feelings any.

The Punisher Annual #1. The Punisher and Spider-man take on two Amazon sized wackos. This is still a part of The Hood story line with the dead (resurrected) bad guys taking a shot at Frank. This story was okay but I have come to expect more from a Punisher annual or over-sized issue.

New Mutants #5. The return of Warlock. I really liked Warlock back in the old New Mutants stories. His return is all that is keeping me on this book for now.

Radical:

Hercules: The Knives of Kush #3 (of 5). More Hercules in ancient Egypt. This book has nice painted style artwork that I really like. What I also like is how gruesome and realistic looking the bloodshed appears.

DC:

Batwoman in Detective Comics #854, 855, 856 and 857. Now normally I wouldn't pick this up. Lesbian Batwoman? But I keep hearing how good the Rucka story is but more importantly how GREAT the Williams III art is. Well they weren't lying. The story is good (very little gayness- I don't feel we need overtly sexual story lines in main stream comics, save that for Strangers In Paradise). But what makes this book shine is the VERY impressive art. The art - lets look at the art. The Batwoman sequences have very interesting panel layout and silky smooth art, while her secret identity (Kate Kane) sequences have a more rounded almost Seth Fisher look to them. This first story arc was very entertaining and will be a nice trade to pick up when it is collected.

Jack of Fables #38 (Vertigo). It's about time for me to get caught up on this title. But I'm not there yet.

Astro City: Astra special #1 (of 2) (Wildstorm). This book has not just a hard stock cover but it's a slick stock cover as well. The cover is set up like your usual grocery store rag (People magazine). Nice looking cover concept, but it is what's in the inside that counts right? And I'm very pleased it's contents are back on par with what made Astro City so good to start with: The human side of super heroes.

Some decent books this week, but The Pick Of My Pile is Astro City Astra Special. This type of story is what made Astro City a special book years ago. Let's have more super hero fare.

Week of 10-7:

This may be a first: more DC purchases this week than Marvel.

DC:

Batman and Robin #5. Nice Quitely cover but where is the Quitely interior art? Couldn't they hold this book for Quitely art? It's a shame DC is too weak to do what would be the right thing to do.

Red Tornado #2 (of 6). More on the origin of The Red Tornado and his sister. Yawn. I hoped this would be good. It's now on my drop watch.

The Warlord #7. Cover-Mike Grell, check. Story-Mike Grell, check. But interior art Mike Grell?,check. AWESOME!!! This issue has so many GREAT two page spreads. Besides braking through the panels, the art practically came off the page! Please give us more! This is the way The Warlord should be. My highest recommendation.

Planetary #27 (Wildstorm). Okay so I haven't read all 26 of the previous issues, but this was still okay for me.

Marvel:

Astonishing X-Men #31. I thought that this was a decent start to the next arc. I think Phil Jimenez' pencils were better suited for this title than the previous artist.

Captain America: Theater of War: Ghosts of my Country #1 (one shot). Another very nicely written (war) story by Paul Jenkins.

Criminal The Sinners #1. The start of the next Tracy Lawless arc! Once again: Brubaker+Phillips=Awesome!

Dark Horse:

Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder: In The Service of Angels #4 (of 5). Nice Mignola story with good Stenbeck art.

IDW:

Star Trek Romulans: Schism #2 (of 5). Okay the first issue wasn't very good, however this issue had something (maybe more starfleet) that made it more interesting.

The Pick Of My Pile this week is..... do I even have to say it? The Warlord #7. It was flat out awesome on all levels. No book can compete with Mike Grell on his signature creation. Check it out.

Keep Reading Comics.

Pick Of My Pile for the weeks of 9-16 and 9-23.

Hello Chums,

How's your comic reading been going? Mine has been going just fine. Before my picks, check out some trades I've read since last time.

First up is Scott Kurtz' PVP vol. 1 "at large". This first vol. collects issues 1-6. I found this collection good over all -funny at times, but what really stands out is his artwork. Although it is cartoonish, yes, his characters and backgrounds all look perfect no matter what the angle or facial expression.

Next is "Ice Haven" by Daniel Clowes. This story takes place in the town of Ice Haven, an average slow moving small town. In this small town there are many characters whose life occurrences are told in (what appears to be) unrelated strips. However, through the course of the story these strips tie together to form a story about a missing boy. Nicely executed story with a slightly weak ending.

Lastly is "I killed Adolf Hitler" by Jason. This story takes place in a world were assassination is a legal profession. A well known killer is hired by a scientist to use his time machine to go back and kill Hitler. That sounds easy right? But is anything easy or straight forward when a time machine is used? Jason, the Norwegian artist/writer, has another nice story will his animal headed people in their (usual) unusual settings.

On to the comics portion.

Week of 9-16:

Marvel:

Mighty Avengers #29. To discover if Wanda is really Wanda. Ronin kisses her. And he says: "The Lips? The Lips Don't Lie. You're Not Wanda. Kinda funny. But this book has been sucking since Bendis left. My Last Issue!

Agents of Atlas #11. The end of Terror of the Jade Claw arc. What a snoozer. My Last Issue!

Punisher #9. Frank up against the Hood's men-yawn! + Opena off the book= On my death watch. I will drop this book if I have too.

Punisher Noir #2. Punisher 1930's gangster style. Great book. Nice art too.

Deadpool - Merc with a mouth #3. Not my usual reading, but a fun book (for now).

Moon Knight Saga (free). This overview of the character is a primer for the new series. Nice cover and art inside. Basically a great idea, (sprung from free comic book day?). There have been a few of these free primers now. I wonder if they have helped sales any? They couldn't have hurt any. Where are the free primers DC? I need one for The Legion of Super heroes.

Vengeance of Moon Knight #1. Nice Ross cover, nice Opena art and nice that this issue contains the first issue of Moon Knight from 1980. But not nice enough for me to get it monthly.

Captain America Reborn #3 (of 5). Captain America drifting through time reliving past experiences? I am not sure about this story yet.

DC:

Batman and Robin #4. No Frank Quitely art? This is only issue 4! Don't get me wrong - Philip Tan is okay, but were is Quitely? I buy enough books a month. I could wait a month or two (if need be) for him to get back on schedule. We didn't need a fill-in this early on. Keep in mind they're not filling in on All-Star Batman for Frank Miller and Jim Lee. And I know their book isn't Batman, but there is plenty of Batman on the shelves each month.

Wednesday Comics #11. The end is near, say it ain't so. This "newspaper" has been good week after week.

IDW:

Star Trek Romulans: Schism #1. Yes it's by John Byrne, but it is off to a very weak start. Art: Okay. Story: BORING!

The Pick Of My Pile this week is Punisher Noir #2. With Wednesday Comics, this book was the only bright spot in my stack.

Week of 9-23:

Marvel:

Dark X-Men - The Confession (one-shot). Emma admits to Scott that she joined Osborn's cabal. That makes sense. But why does Scott have to tell Emma he sent X-Force to kill the enemy? Who cares? Emma wouldn't she's a hard ass.

Uncanny X-Men #515. The dramatic re-return of Magneto.

Giant-Size Wolverine - Old Man Logan (one-shot). Finally! The long awaited conclusion with a nice cover gallery (featuring the variants and what has to be one of Michael Turners last covers).

Spider-Woman #1. Ross cover - check. Over sized issue - check. Cool Bendis set-up - check. Slick Maleev art - check. A winner all the way around!

Astonishing X-Men Sketchbook (free). This primer is suppose to get you fired up about the next arc with art by Phil Jimenez. I think it failed. Where is Cassaday and Whedon? This is their book!

The New Avengers #57. There has been some terrific artists on New Avengers over the last few years. Stuart Immonen is not one of them. He is okay on some projects, but does not have the right look (or talent) for New Avengers. BLAAH!

Immortal Weapons #3 (of 5). The legend of Dog Brother #1. A sad tale set in 1840's Hong Kong.

Halo - Helljumper #3 (of 5). Dutch and Romeo continue to battle the Covenant on the planet Ariel.

Radical:

Hercules The Knives of Kush #2 (of 5). Hercules and his followers continue to protect Seti, Pharaoh of Egypt.

IDW:

Star Trek - Spock Reflections #3. Spock's traveling destination revealed: the final spot were Jim Kirk took his last breath.

DDP:

The Zombies That Ate The World #5 (of 8). More twisted zombie wrangling stories by Guy Davis.

Image:

'76 #5 (of 8). It's finally here! As promised to me by B. Clay Moore himself, (at Planet Comic-con in Kansas City, way back in March) #5 has finally seen the light of day. It's now been over a year between issues. Was it worth it? No. It was alright at best. I'm now at least hopeful that the two stories will pick up in action for the final three issues.

DC:

Wednesday Comics #12. A nice wrap up issue (for most story lines anyway). My favorite (and saddest was Kamandi).

The Pick Of My Pile this week is Spider-Woman #1. As I said before, this was a great issue and set in motion a nice story line.

Pick Of My Pile for the weeks of 9-02 and 9-10.

Hello Chums,

As usual, I read a few trades this week. The first trade was "PVP Player Vs. Player - the dork ages". This collection, by Scott Kurtz, is the material that was published before his move to Image. This trade is broken down into six (comic book) issues. And each issue has a theme. And not only are they theme issues (Matrix, A Christmas special, Pokemon etc...), they are very nicely gray toned. I liked the look of that a lot. True not colored, but the grays adds a lot of nice depth. The art and stories were good too.

The next book was Yoshihiro Tatsumi's 856 (eight hundred fifty six) page monster "A Drifting Life". This book, that was over ten years in the making, documents Hiroshi's (Tatsumi) life as a Manga artist from 4th grade (1945) up through his mid 20's (1960). Much like "The Pushman" this book is jam-packed with fabulous art. But it's the story of young Hiroshi and his brother's obsession with creating Manga that really draws you in. Hiroshi "drifts" through life from a kid entering his Manga each week to be selected for newspaper print to an adult creating a whole new off-shoot of Manga called Gekiga. This book is a complete winner. I wish it could have been longer!

How about a few weeks picks?

Week of 9-02:

Marvel:

Incognito #6 (Icon). The conclusion of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' super powered crime story.

Immortal Weapons #2 (of 5). The Bride of Nine Spiders story. Art by Dan Brereton!

Agents of Atlas #10. Excellent art by Gabriel Hardman. Story: so-so.

Oni:

Resurrection #3. The Bugs have left. Who is in charge of our country now? Artwork here leaves a lot to be desired. Bring back vol. 1's artist and gray scale. It was much sharper looking.

Image:

Jersey Gods #7. The first issue of the next arc. Let's see where this one goes.

DDP:

I Am Legion #5 (of 6). Great art and coloring by John Cassaday and Laura Martin. The story has cooled a little bit for me.

Dark Horse:

Sir Edward Grey Witchfinder #3 (of 5). Nice story with period piece art by Ben Stenbeck.

DC:

Red Tornado #1 (of 6). Red Tornado deals with his lack of humanity, much like data from star Trek The Next Generation. But this is not necessarily a bad thing.

Wednesday Comics #9. These 16 weekly strips continue to be great.

The Pick Of My Pile this week is Incognito #6. Decent story and great art throughout the arc.

Week of 9-10:

Not a dud this week! And that's saying something.

Marvel:

The Marvel Project #2. Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting bring us the beginning of the Marvel universe.

Thor Tales Of Asgard #5 (of 6). More early Thor greatness by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby with modern coloring. Brilliant!

Ultimate Avengers #2. Red Skull (Caps son cool!) has a peeled face. Creepy but cool.

Dark Avengers / Uncanny X-Men Exodus. Conclusion. Nice end to the Utopia event.

Kick-Ass #7. The cover says it all: ASS KICKED. Betrayal, Death. How much more can this kid take?

Dark Horse:

B.P.R.D. 1947 #3. Another old creepy story with Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon art.

Hellboy -The Wild Hunt #6 (of 8). This arc has been one of the best in a long time. And check out Gianni's The Monstermen. It's cool.

Image:

Elephantmen #21. Cool. Very nice story and art.

IDW:

Star Trek Nero #2. A nice precursor to the new movie.

DC:

The Warlord #6. The end to the first story arc. Pretty good so far. I hope Mike Grell will continue to write and do the covers.

Wednesday Comics #10. The greatness continues.

The Pick Of My Pile this week Thor Tales of Asgard #5. Great stories with modern coloring.

Keep Reading Comics

Pick Of My Pile for the weeks of 8-19 and 8-26.

Hello Chums,

Besides my usual large amounts of comics that I read each week, I also try to fit in as many trades as I can. This two week period I was able to fit in three trades. The first was Tom Strong's Terrific Tales vol. 2. This nice hardcover featured the last 6 issues of the series. Good stories and art by Art Adams and Bruce Timm among others. The others trades were Powers vol. 10 Cosimic (Cosmic) and vol. 11 Secret Identity. I love the Powers series. The story arcs and art work were both very good. I can't wait to read the next one.

Week of 8-19:

Marvel:

Daredevil #500. This massive issue features a 42 page story by Brubaker and Lark, an 8 page Dark Reign primer, a 13 page story by Nocenti and Aja, 10 pages of pin-ups (featuring Geof Darrow and Rafael Grandpa), the complete issue #191 "Roulette" by Frank Miller and the 500 covers gallery. Wow, what an issue!

Punisher Noir #1. 30's era Punisher with gritty art and muted color pallet.

Stephen King The Stand: American Nightmares # 5 (of 5). This series remains very good. I look forward to the next arc.

Ultimate Avengers #1. Very good opening issue (story and art).

All Winners #1. I was looking forward to this 70th anniversary issue. And boy was I disappointed.

Punisher #8. The Punisher takes on the Avengers (and knocks out Thor with one punch.) Is this really the Avengers?

Mighty Avengers #28. I was ready to drop this book. However, I'm hanging in there for awhile longer as I like their current story arc.

IDW:

Star Trek Spock Reflections #2. More Spock solo movie tie-in.

DC:

Jack of Fables (Vertigo) #37. I haven't started to continue this book since the Fables cross-over. When I do get back to Fables and Jack I'm going to have a chunk to read.

Wednesday Comics #7. This continues to be very good but I look forward to Kamandi most of all.

Boom:

Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? What can I say about this book? Well, it's very wordy but it does have the text by Dick.

The Pick Of My Pile this week was a no-brainer. Daredevil #500 was far and away the best book this week. Check out the sweet Darrow variant cover. I got one.

Week of 8-26:

Marvel:

Halo Helljumper #2 (of 5). As the Human - Covenant war rages on, the Helljumpers are dropped on the planet Ariel. Action ensues!

Deadpool Merc With A Mouth #1. I liked issue two so much, I picked up one to see what was going on. I think this book is pretty good, but I don't need to add another monthly book.

New Avengers #56. A very nice action packed issue with the Wrecking Crew.

Beta Ray Bill Godhunter #3 (of 3). A nice conclusion to this mini-series and good value too. Each issue has a full issue reprint back-up feature. And only 4 adds! Why can't all issues be like this?

New Mutants #4. The conclusion to the opening Legion arc. Next issue: Warlock! Isn't he dead?

Dark Avengers #8 - Utopia p.5. This mini-event has actually been pretty good. Next issue the conclusion.

Stephen King - The Dark Tower: Fall of Gilead #4 (of 6). Dark Tower: heh. The Stand: Awesome.

IDW:

Doctor Who - The Time Machination (one-shot). The Doctor and H.G. Wells dodging The Torchwood Institute.

DC:

The Flash Rebirth #4. Initially I liked this series, but this issue was very dull.

Batman and Robin #3. Batman driving a (Batmaned) atv: cool. Young Robin being a tough little bastard: cool. Fighting Professor Pyg: Heh.

Wednesday Comics #8. More comic goodness continues.

The Pick Of My Pile this week was not as easy as the previous week. There were some good books, but no really great books. Dark Avengers and Beta Ray Bill were good, but my pick this week is New Avengers #56. There were some nice scenes in this issue especially the battle with the Wrecking Crew.

Pick Of My Pile for the weeks of 8-05 and 8-12.

Hello Chums,

I'm finally caught up on my comic reading since the Comic-con. And I have managed to get in three more trades.

The first trade is The Exterminators vol. 5 Bug Brothers Forever (the final book). Although I initially liked The Exterminators, I think the last two trades were very weak in the series. It's too bad that the series ended so abruptly and weakly.

My second read was The King by Rich Koslowski, which I bought from him at Comic-con. This story is kind of a what if Elvis came out of hiding and started singing again. Well there would surely be an investigation into his authenticity, wouldn't there?

The third book I read this week is Funny Misshapen Body by Jeffrey Brown. Brown, one of my favorite creators, has created his best work to date. This book labeled "A Memoir" contains many personal stories ranging from youthful health issues to life in college and grad school. Not to be missed. My highest recommendation.

On to my picks.

Week of 8-05:

Marvel:

Agents of Atlas #9. This book has kind of ran it's course with me.

Captain America Reborn #2 (of 5). Continuing the return of Captain America by Brubaker and Hitch.

Deadpool: Merc with a mouth #2. I bought this because I really liked the cover and decided to give it a shot. The story and art weren't half bad.

IDW:

Star Trek: Alien Spotlight: Q. A nice Captain Picard vs. Q story.

Blacklist Studios (who are they?):

R13 #1. Colossus! What is it? How about a skeletal diver/robot vs. a ship sinking squid. All with Mike Mignola stylized art!

Dark Horse:

Sir Edward Grey Witchfinder #2 (of 5). More sir Edward in the service of angels.

Image:

Jersey Gods #6. Zoe and her god boyfriend Barock look for a house to settle in, in New Jersey. Probably the best issue since the first.

DC:

Warlord #5. The Warlord leaves Skartaris looking for some real firepower. Meanwhile the rest of the gang is reading for the big battle.

Astro City: The Dark Age: Book Three #4. (Wildstorm) The final issue of this arc. Now bring on the one-shots.

Wednesday Comics #5 (of 16). This newspaper continues to be a real winner.

The Pick Of My Pile this week is Star Trek: Alien Spotlight: Q. I miss the Picard/Q episodes of The Next Generation. That was one thing that series (and this) done right.

Week of 8-12:

Marvel:

Uncanny X-Men #514. Utopia p.4. Continuing with Norman Osborn's Dark Avengers and Dark X-Men vs. Uncanny X-Men lead Scott Summers.

Captain America: Theater Of War: To Soldier On #1 (one-shot). A modern day tale of the price of war in Iraq.

Thor: Tales Of Asgard #4 (of 6). More Thor early tales by Smilin' Stan Lee and Jack "King" Kirby. very good with nice new coloring.

The Marvels Project #1 (of 8). The start of the Marvel universe by Brubaker and Epting. Maybe too early to say, but this looks good.

Dark Horse:

Hellboy: The Wild Hunt #5 (of 8). Finally this story is back! I hope it finishes as well as it started.

B.P.R.D.: 1947 #2. Early B.P.R.D. story featuring a different team. And art by the brothers Ba' and Moon.

IDW:

Hero Comics: A Hero Initiative Benefit Book. A very nice book benefiting creators in need with work by Howard Chaykin, David Lloyd, Gene Colan and Arthur Adams among others. This book also features Marvel characters. Where's the love DC?

Star Trek: Nero #1. A prequel of sorts to the new Trek movie. Very good start.

Starstruck #1. This first issue reminded me of Skydoll (but not in a good way).

Radical (my first Radical purchase):

Hercules: The Knives of Kush #1 (of 5). Jim Steranko cover. But the art, coloring and story are impressive. I'll be back for more.

DC:

Wednesday Comics #6 (of 16). The sixth part of these great comics. Highlights include: Batman, Kamandi, Superman, Metamorpho and Strange Adventures.

The Pick Of My Pile this week came down to a few books, including: Hercules, Star Trek : Nero, and B.P.R.D. But the pick is Captain America: Theater Of War. This book had a moving story that really hit on all cylinders. Check it out.

Keep Reading Comics.

Pick Of My Pile for the weeks of 7-22 and 7-29.

Hello Chums,

Now that I'm back from the Comic-Con, I've been reading a steady stream of books. I'm finally starting to get caught up on my weekly reading. Here are two weeks worth of books.

Week of 7-22:

Marvel:

The Incredible Hulk #600. Even though I'm not currently reading The Hulk, I could not resist this milestone issue with the Ross cover. This thick, 100 page monster is filled with a lot of Hulk goodness: New stories by Loeb and McGuinness, Stan Lee and Van Lente. This issue also features part 1 of Loeb and Sale's Hulk Gray. And of course the 600 covers gallery. Nice!

the Amazing Spider-Man #600. What? Another issue #600 milestone book the same week? Yes, and with another Ross cover! This issue has a 60 page story by Dan Slott with art by John Romita Jr. Great story. The issue also features stories by Stan Lee, Mark Waid, Bob Gale and Marc Guggenheim with art by Mitch Breitweiser, all good. What I don't understand is why they featured fake covers instead of the 600 issue cover gallery. That's not cool.

Immortal Weapons #1 Fat Cobra. The break out star from The Immortal Iron Fist, Fat Cobra, gets an origin story! Good stuff. Written by new Marvel superstar Jason Aaron.

Halo: Helljumper #1 (of 5). This issue, written by Peter David, is off to a good start. Let's hope it's better than Bendis' Halo tale.

NEC:

The Mangalicious Tick #1 (of 4). The Tick in some Manga feudal Japan story. One word: Terrible!

Dark Horse:

Dethklok versus The Goon (one-shot). A rock band named Dethklok is (magically?) transported to The Goon's world. Let the madness begin.

IDW:

Star Trek: Spock Reflections #1. This mini-series follows Spock after the events of the new Star Trek movie.

DC:

Wednesday Comics #3 (of 16). Continuing on with part 3 of the featured 16 strips. Mandatory reading.

Jack of Fables #36 (Vertigo). I'm still not caught up on Jack after The Great Fables Crossover.

The Pick Of My Pile this week is Spider-Man #600. Yeah, there wasn't a cover gallery ( almost unforgivable), but the Slott / Jr. Jr. story was very good. It really felt like an anniversary story.

Week of 7-29:

Marvel:

Stephen King: The Dark Tower: Fall Of Gilead #3 (of 6). It's really amazing that Richard Isanove's art work looks so much like Jae Lee's. Now why couldn't Lee do it?

The New Avengers #55. Finally, no Doctor Strange mystic non-sense. Now it "appears" that a real story arc has started. We'll see.

Ultimatum #5 (of 5). Finally the end of this non-sense. I did like the nice Finch art on Wolverine melting down and Dr. Doom and Magneto's end. Very cool panels. It's too bad the story was terrible.

Fantastic Four #569. The last of the Millar and Hitch run. Unfortunately the arc ended with a mild let down. I do think that over all their run was pretty good.

Dark X-Men #1. This first issue shows how Norman Osborn gets Namor, Mimic and Dark Beast to join his team.

Dark X-Men #2. This issue features Norman recruiting Cloak and Dagger, Weapon Omega and Daken (Wolverine's son) to the team.

IDW:

Star Trek: Mission's End #5 (of 5). The end of this very weird story arc with intelligent spiders and centipedes. This is Kirk's last mission aboard the Enterprise as captain. Now he's off to be Admiral Kirk.

DC:

Wednesday Comics #4 (of 16). These strips have all been good. My stand out favorites are: Kamandi, Strange Adventures, Superman, Metamorpho and Batman.

The Pick Of My Pile this week is Dark X-Men #1. Check out my sweet San Diego Comic-Con variant. I enjoyed the 3 individual stories especially the Namor and Mimic stories.

Pick Of My Pile for the weeks of 7-8 and 7-15.

Hello Chums,

With Comic-con now behind me it's time to get caught up on my reading. Here are some recent picks.

Week of 7-8:

Marvel:

Thor: Tales of Asgard #3(of 6). These are very nice tales by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby with new re-coloring.

Stephen King: The Stand America Nightmares #4 (of 5). Continuing on with the retelling of King's best book.

Dark Avengers / Uncanny X-Men Utopia #1. Basically Norman Osborn's team vs. Scott Summers' team. With Emma Frost somewhere in the middle.

Dark Horse:

B.P.R.D. 1947 #1. A Professor Trevor Broom story by Mignola, Ba and Moon.

Image:

Elephantmen: War Toys: Dangerous Liaisons: Yvette #0 (of 8). A stand alone story of Yvette pre-War Toys.

DDP:

I Am Legion #4 (of 6). More 1940's occult action. With art by John Cassaday.

The Zombies That Ate The World #4 (of 8). More twisted zombie action from Guy Davis.

DC:

The Warlord #4. Written by Mike Grell, this series continues to impress.

Wednesday Comics #1 (of 16). This "newspaper" is the size of a comic -quartered. When unfolded twice the pages are 14 x 20 inches. The artwork is not just big - it's bold. Each issue features 16 different on-going stories.

The Pick Of My Pile This Week is Wednesday Comics #1. It's a fantastic idea and DC is doing it well.

Week of 7-15:

Marvel:

The Mighty Avengers #27. Just when I was thinking of dropping this book it started to get better. Death watch is now on hold.

Punisher #7. I like these stories by Remender but what happened to the very great art by O'pena?

Captain America #601. A very special flashback issue by Brubaker and Colan.

New Mutants #3. Okay this isn't getting any better. Finish this lame Legion arc already.

Dark Avengers #7 Utopia. A very good issue featuring Scott against Norman.

Agents of Atlas #8. An okay issue. But what happened to Hardman's art?

Beta Ray Bill Godhunter #2 (of 3). An excellent issue with Bill against the Silver Surfer. This issue also has Thor #338 (origin of Beta Ray Bill) in it's entirety.

All Select Comics #1. (Timely) This issue features a new Blonde Phantom story by Marc Guggenheim and some old Marvex The Super Robot reprints.

Incognito #5 (of 6). (Icon). The penultimate issue of this arc.

Dark Horse:

Creepy #1. 48 fear filled pages with new and old tales. Black and white goodness!

IDW:

Star Trek Crew #5 (of 5 or 6?). More old Trek tales with the original #1 and Pike.

DC:

Wednesday Comics #2 (of 16). Continuing DC's newspaper sized comics action.

The Pick Of My Pile this week is Beta Ray Bill Godhunter. It's a good story with a full issue length backup. That's great value.

Keep Reading Comics.

MY SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON '09

Hello Chums,

Okay, last year I went to the Comic-Con and lost my cell phone early on, that was a major bummer. With the lack of pay phones available these days, a cell phone at a big con is a necessity. After that fiasco last year, I decided to (as they say at the conventions) "Have a good con". A good con? No way! I was going to have a great con. Did I? Read on.
Wednesday 7-22:
Up at 0400, airport by 0515 and flight out at 0710. After about an hour lay over in Denver, we arrive in San Diego at 0930 (west coast time). By 1030 we're checked into the hotel and then get lunch at a sandwich shop. At 1430 I'm in line at the convention center for my credentials. Then we have dinner at the Rockin' Baja Lobster, fish tacos! At 1730 the doors opened for Preview Night!

Preview Night. This is one of the best parts of the show. The huge dealers room is open for business. And what a room it is. Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse they all have booths. There are plenty of smaller publishers also like Drawn and Quarterly, Heavy Metal, IDW and my personal favorite Top Shelf. There is a golden and silver age pavilion of comics dealers. Mile High comics and Bud Plant books also have big displays. There are many smaller booths selling comics, trades, action figures, statues, posters, you name it. And that's just the comics end of the building. The media side has super size booths featuring things like Lucas Film (showing a sweeeet animated Star Wars trailer), Disney, Heroes, Sony and Mattel. Once you make your way through all that mess, artist alley sets by itself in a somewhat forgotten corner (why isn't it next to the comic books?) This night is a good time to look for one of a kind items and talk to creators that will be busy during the rest of the show. [I gave Chris Staros, publisher at Top Shelf, one of my mini-comics.] At 2100 Preview Night was over. Bummer that it was over so soon, but I purchased numerous books at great prices! After that busy day, I returned back to the hotel room and went to bed after midnight. Now that's a big first day.
Thursday 7-23:

Up at 0715 and down to the bus stop at 0845. All of the buses appear full so we walk the mile to the convention center. As we approach the con, the amount of cars, buses and foot traffic steadily increase to grid lock. There are just so many people trying to get into too small a building, it's ridicules. Did I call this building small? It's huge (about 7 blocks long, a block wide and three stories tall), but too small for this amount of people. By 0930 we make it to the doors and walk right in.

First up, I check out some of the half cover price nick and dent trades. Why pay full price? These books are usually in pretty good shape. At 1100 I met Jeffery Brown at the Top Shelf booth. He signed the five books of his I brought, did a sketch in each and did a sketch in my sketch book. I also bought his new book and a limited edition con pack. Very Cool! Then I gave him one of my mini-comics. From 1245 till 1400 I take a brake from the con for lunch and to lighten my backpack. Then it's a bus ride back to the con for more browsing in the dealers room. Although there are 15 rooms of simultaneous programming, I spent the whole day on the con floor, but that's usually what I do on the first day. At 1830 I ride the bus back to room. This is important because after a whole day at the show, carrying that backpack any longer is not an option. By 2000 back to The Gas Lamp Quarter for dinner. After being closed the last couple of years, I was pleasantly surprised to find their Spaghetti Warehouse back open. Even though it was cool and breezy, we ate dinner on the patio. Then it was back to the con for some late night programming. At the con after the con-floor (dealer's room) closes, there are movies to watch or games to play. We went to a room showing action/fight scenes from various Japanese Karate movies that I'd never heard of. Cool. After that back to the hotel room at around midnight.

Friday 7-24:

After waking up way too early (0630), we grab breakfast at a train themed restaurant, then we walk the rest of the way to the con. The weather is amazingly cool this morning, low 70's with clear skies. Since it had been over 100 degrees in OKC, this walk feels very nice. We arrive at the con with all the masses at 0925.

I hit the con floor looking for deals until 1045, then I go to the DC panel in room 4 (already in progress.) I find a good seat and wait for the Darrick Robertson spotlight panel at 1100. The Darrick Robertson panel was pretty good. He talked about current projects (The Boys), past projects (Punisher) and whats up next.

At 1200 I stay in this room for the next panel. It's the Radical Comics panel with all their creators. Now I really wanted to see Jim Steranko who I've never seen at a con, but I was really surprised when Gene Simmons walked in with four very large security guards. He set down on the front row, (I moved up to the third row behind him) He didn't set up on the stage (which was surprising). I know his book comes out through IDW but why was he here? Well when Gene's son Nick Simmons joined all of the creators on the stage, all was apparent. All of the creators talked about their books during a power point presentation. When it was Nick's turn to talk about his own written and drawn book, I was thinking that he got that gig because his dad is Gene Simmons. But I have to tell you that I was mildly impressed by his level of artwork.

At 1300 I bolt from room 4 across the sails pavilion (autograph signing area) to ballroom 20. Unlike room 4 which will seat 250 -300 people, this huge room can seat something like 5000 people, but it will fill up easily if you don't get there early. I do get a seat for The Big Bang Theory panel. Hosted by Mike Mignola, this panel featured all the cast and the show creator. This panel is always a lot of fun. They show funny comic book related clips, then talk about the show, then take question from the audience. It was during this panel last year that I dropped my cell phone. Luckily I held on to it this year.

At 1400 I go back to room 4 for the Darwyn Cooke spotlight panel. Since I'd never seen Darwyn before (and being a big fan), this panel was a must. He talked a little about his DC work (New Frontier / Solo / Catwoman). But mostly this panel featured his new IDW book Parker. After this panel I head directly down to the IDW table and have Darwyn sign my Batman Ego prestige book I brought from home and a Parker poster that they were giving out at the booth.
At 1500 I brake from the con for awhile, the weather is great outside and I want to lighten my back pack. By 1630 back to the con for 2 hours and then Sammy's Woodfired Pizza for dinner (sun dried tomato with pine seeds!)

At 2000 we head over to the Indigo Room at the new Hilton Bayfront hotel (next door to the convention center) for the Will Eisner Comics Industry Awards. The Eisner awards are another must do of the show. A lot of the nominated creators are there and can be met before or after the awards. When the awards are finished, it's back to the hotel via bus at 2330. Another big day.

Saturday 7-25:

Again up at 0630 without an alarm. I ride the bus to the con at 1000 and walk right in. From 1000-1130 I roam around the show floor.

By 1140 I'm in the very large room 6 A, at the Marvel comics Dark Reign panel. This panel features Joe Quesada, Jason Aaron, Matt Fraction and many more. They talk all things Dark Reign and show up coming cover images. Questions are asked but not much is revealed. The usual response from Joey Q. is "keep reading".

At 1230 I head back over to room 4 for the Gary Gianni spotlight. This panel also featured Mike Mignola and Geoff Darrow. This panel had Gianni using a power point presentation commenting on various drawings or paintings he's done and their inspiration. This was a fun panel with Mignola and Darrow poking some fun at Gianni whenever possible.

At 1330 I head over to room 8 for the last half of the Will Eisner's New York panel. This was a depressing panel featuring Eisner's friends and editors talking about how much they still miss him and what he meant to them and the comics industry. There were plenty of slides shown of New York City and Eisner's art.

At 1400 I stay in this room for the Webcomics Bootcamp panel. The panel featured Scott Kurtz, Brad Guigar, Kris Straub and Dave Kellett writers of the book "How To Make Web Comics". If I would have known they were going to be there, I would have brought my book to have them sign it. This panel was not just informative, but was a lot of fun.

I stay in this room for the next panel: Spotlight on Seth. Seth (if your unfamiliar) is a dapperly dressed (20's era, 30's era?) odd fellow who has written and drawn a few books for Drawn and Quarterly. One of his books is very good Wimbledon Green. (I wish I would have brought my copy to get it signed.) Anyways, Seth read from his notes of various occurrences and stories from his life, broken up into twelve chapters. At each chapter break he would ring a bell. During the reading he had a running power point presentation of his art and model building constructs. Although subject matter was at times funny, his voice and the fact that the lights were dimmed made it too easy for me to zone out for a little nap in the middle. Bummer.

From 1530-1715 I hit the show floor for more buying and browsing. Then it's back upstairs to ballroom 20 and the True Blood panel, if I can get in.

I do make it in to the True Blood panel (just barely.) The room is packed and people are standing around the walls. Moderated by some LA Times reporter, almost all the cast is present along with the show creator Alan Ball and author of the books Charlaine Harris. During the panel they show a teaser trailer of scenes from the up coming episodes, the cast talks about the show and fans can ask questions. From the fan reaction in the room and what was said from the shows producer, there should be quite a few more seasons. Yes!

From 1815-1900 I hit the show floor. Then bus ride back to the room and dinner at Elephant and Castle (an English Pub type restaurant-with good food). Then it's back to ballroom 20 for the masquerade ball at 2100.

Hosted by Phil Foglio, the Masquerade / Costume Competition is another must of the show. Okay some of the costumes are not that great, but some are fantastic. Most of the 40 or so competitors come out to music and do some sort of dance or skit which is usually funny or entertaining.

After seeing the various costumes up close after the show, we head over to the dance at the sails pavilion. I'm not a dancer so I don't stay here long. We get back to our room by 0100. Another huge day.

Sunday 7-26:

Up at 0730 and to the con by 0935. After seeing people lined up on the sidewalk last night at 0030 for the Dr. Who panel the next day, I decide maybe I should try to go (if I can get into ballroom 20 again.) I mean when am I ever going to get a chance to see my favorite doctor again?

After fighting a huge influx of people coming up the back stairs (kind of like a salmon swimming up stream), I just do make it into the very full room! Then sure enough David Tennant is announced. He makes his way to his chair with thousands of fans yelling for him (almost like a rock star.) Some of the show producers then join him on the stage. There is plenty of talk about the show, some fan questions and a sweet teaser trailer of David Tennant's last four episodes. Although I'm not a huge Dr. Who fan, I find Tennant's doctor very entertaining and I will be sorry to see him leave. This panel was another high light of my comic-con this year.

By 1115 I'm back down on the show floor for final purchases.

(Hey check out Brent Spiner and Leonard Nimoy -COOL!)

At 1200 I grab lunch and go to the Bill Willingham spotlight in room 2. I went to this panel last year and being a Fables fan had a lot of fun. This year was no different. All of the Fables and Jack of Fables teams were there answering questions and talking about the books. If your a Fables fan this panel is a must.

By 1315 back on the show floor. I stop by the Vertigo booth talk to Jason Aaron about his great book Scalped. Then I give him a copy of my mini-comic.

At 1500 I swing by the Marvel booth and talk to C.B. Cebulski. His book Wonderlost (and Jeffery Brown's books) inspired me to do my mini-comic. So I give him a copy.

The rest of my time is spent on the show floor until 1645. Then it's back to our room by 1720. At 1815 back to the Gas Lamp Quarter to eat at the Gas Lamp Strip Club for dinner (you cook your own steaks). Then back to the room for FINAL PACK. How do I get all this stuff home?

Monday 7-26:

1220 flight to Denver sitting by Josh Howard artist of Image Comics The Astounding Wolfman. I give him a copy of my mini-comic. After a 1 1/2 hour lay over, I'm back home in OKC by 2100.
Did I have fun? You bet! I'm already looking forward to next years con season.
Keep Reading Comics.
